This video shows how polish people abandoned "Jackowo," which was a cradle of polish culture n America. No one took care of it, and time took over...

Great Video, not entirely accurate but certainly a wake up call for the polish community. I live here and I am really getting tired of people asking me if there are still any polish people here and why I am still here. I was even told by a PNA official once that he thought all the polish people moved out. Totally not true. The area has been block busted by polish realtors since the 80's but is still packed full of polish people as is the church and milwaukee ave. We are a long way off from the abandonement of bucktown or wicker park, our original polish neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteI saw this video originally when it came out and had mixed feelings so when i saw the 1st comment I felt the same way and wanted to add to that...its a good video but not entirely true...i am 32 yrs old and have been living here since i came to united states at 11 yrs old...i grew up here went to st hyacinth school...yes its true there are other nationalities such as mexican and others and more yuppies but there are still many polish businesses here along with polish people living here and attending st hyacinth basilica...and yes i do to roll my eyes when people ask me why I am still here...so in return I ask them so why you come back here to some stores and come to church even though you live far away?
